Google Custom Domains require a CNAME referral to work properly. The
host “ghs.google.com” is a load balancing DNS server array, and makes
dynamic assignments. The error in blogger shows “Another blog is already hosted at this domain

another blog is already hosted at this domain

Errors caused when integrating custom domains and Google Apps services in blogger

This error is usually seen when the domain is registered with or using Google Apps services. There are many solution given to this problem in the Google Groups Blogger help section. But truely this section has really gone very much vast by now only due to these errors.

There are different solutions given to this problem.

Point both ‘mydomain.com’ and ‘www.mydomain.com’ to ghs.google.com

Creating an A record for ‘mydomain.com’ to 64.233.179.121 might land up in the Start page of your Google Apps services for your domain like ‘http://partnerpage.google.com/mydomain.com’ while accessing ‘mydomain.com’.

Disabling, enabling and then again disabling web pages service in google apps dashboard(this might give a 404 server not found error for some time).

blogger error

If you are this error like 404 server not found for more than 12 hours then go to your blogger dashboard and try switching between custom domain and blogspot domain. To do this first reset your custom domain to blogspot and then setting it back to your custom domain.(this usually works)

What makes this Custom domain error in blogger

While setting custom domain in blogger you need to setup this DNS instruction which is pretty simple.

Add one or more “CNAME” records. Point “www.yourdomain.com”, and / or “yourdomain.com”, to “ghs.google.com”.

What is an A record ?

An A record can point a host name to an IP address. To point just mydomain.com to an IP address, leave the “Record Host” field blank. To point www.mydomain.com to an IP address enter www into the “Record Host” field. To point all sub domains for mydomain.com that do not already have a host record to an IP address enter * into the “Record Host” field. You can add multiple host records for a domain name.

What is a CNAME record ?

A CNAME or canonical name record points a hostname with no other records to another valid hostname. The canonical name you use should have no other DNS records associated with it. CNAME’s should only be used in a very few instances, for common aliases and host names use an A record instead. If you do not understand what CNAME’s are used for, then chances are you should not be using them. The misuse of CNAME records can cause problems with the resolution of your domain name if not used properly.

dns hosting google apps

But all the DNS hosts do not support this feature since their domain should resolve to A record(IP) so it is not possible to make a CNAME record to ‘mydomain.com’.There domain should be pointed to IP to resolve globally.

Another way is to contact your DNS host support and ask them for support.

UPdate:

How I managed to redirect mydomain.com to www.mydomain.com with Godaddy.I will tell you step by step and this is the final solution. In the Total Dns Control Panel of Godaddy first of all delete every CNAME and A records. Then add a new CNAME record with alias name as ‘www’  without quotes  and point it to  ghs.google.com  .Then  add a new A record with host  name ‘mydomain.com’  without quotes and point it to ip address 64.202.189.170 and wait for 10 minutes. Now the address mydomain.com will automatically redirect to www.mydomain.com.This is the only effective and the most effecient  way of redirecting custom domains in blogger.Check Renjus blog where it is perfectly implemented.

  3. Your fix on how to redirect mydomain.com to www.mydomain.com with Godaddy didn’t work for me. I did everything exactly as you said. Is there something I’m missing? I’m trying to get http://searchanddecide.com to redirect to http://www.searchanddecide.com. All I get is an IE error saying it can’t display the page.

I can’t see any problem to your blog http://anangyb.blogspot.com/
    Its working here for me.
Try to clear your DNS cache before trying that blog in your browser and it might work.

  7. Hi,
I tried the “UPdate” also, my “domain.com” doesn’t get forwarded to “www.domain.com”. and there’s no info at “renjus blog”…please help, thanks…

  8. Hi!

  10. Basically this works by using the GoDaddy built-in url forwarding feature.

With the above instructions for a domain, say YOURSITEABCD.COM:

The CNAME record for www.YOURSITEABCD.com sends the DNS requests over to Google’s Blogger Server.

The A record for YOURSITEABCD.com (no ‘www’) sends the DNS requests to Godaddy’s Server (64.202.189.170). Godaddy’s server then forwards the user to www.YOURSITEABCD.com.

This solves the root access issue, where YOURSITEABCD.com does not resolve to the blog, and www.YOURSITEABCD.com does resolve, now both should resolve to the blog.

  11. In the above post, the CNAME record would be used where users type in www.YOURSITEABCD.com to their browser, and the A record would be used to correct situations where users type in only YOURSITEABCD.com into their browser by forwarding to www.YOURSITEABCD.com

  12. Hi dude,
Thank you very much for the information. It works fine. I’ve solved my dns issue.
